Print on Demand. This book explores the concept of happiness and its relationship to pleasure, a topic that has fascinated philosophers and writers for centuries. The author uses a vivid allegory to illustrate these ideas, taking the reader on a journey through a bustling plain where they encounter two figures, Pleasure and Happiness. Pleasure, a dazzlingly beautiful woman, promises a life filled with immediate gratification and sensual delights. Happiness, on the other hand, appears more modest but offers a deeper, lasting fulfillment. Through the allegorical journey, the author delves into the thematic depth of these ideas, highlighting the dangers of pursuing pleasure at the expense of true happiness, and demonstrating how the pursuit of happiness necessitates a balance between intellectual pursuits, physical well-being, and moral integrity. Ultimately, this book provides a timeless and insightful commentary on the complexities of human desire and the pursuit of a meaningful life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

In conclusion, the compiler hopes that the Eclectic Reader will be an acceptable addition to the number of reading \books already before the public. Selections might have been made from Milton, Cowper, Shake speare, Thomson, and other well-known writers, both foreign and American; but it was not necessary. As some compensation, the man of taste will be pleased with the mature and finished compositions of Professors Playfair and Frisbie, the delightful allegories of Jane Taylor, the wisdom married to immortal verse of Coleridge and Wordsworth, the manly sense and com prehensive views of Evarts, and the Ciceronian elegance and dignity of Robert Hall.
