Eastern Life, Present and Past by Harriet Martineau, Complete in One Volume, Lea and Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1848, 523 pp plus publisher s list, brown blind cloth, 8.5 x 6 , 8vo. In fair condition. Boards are moderately worn with scuffing to extremities with modest soiling overall. Bottom right corner of front board afflicted with rodent damage. Corners bumped. End bands lightly crushed with slightly loss at bottom band. Old hand ownership on pastedown. Dampness staining throughout affecting most of the text. Remains legible. Scattered foxing throughout with age-staining. General age related toning to text. Binding intact. Please see photos. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was an English social theorist often seen as the first female sociologist. She wrote from a sociological, holistic, religious and feminine angle, translated works by Auguste Comte, and, rarely for a woman writer at the time, earned enough to support herself.
