From the Author
I wrote this song based on "Over in the Meadow", sung to me by my grandfather when I was very small. By replacing the meadow creatures with endangered animals, this song has entered many a classroom in its new incarnation. Teachers have sent me videos and cassettes of projects they have done as extensions of this book. They include puppet shows or dances of the song, new verses written by students (grades K-4), and in-depth reports about the animals. When I finally met the illustrator, Melissa Bay Mathis, we really hit it off and now we want to make a quilt of all the animals in the book. I'd be very curious to know what other ideas young readers and teachers come up with to interpret this book...
