About this Item
"First published, March 1899 / Reprinted, October 1911 / May 1920." Thus, the third printing. "Publisher's Note / There has been considerable rearrangement of the plates. Many that originally appeared in the 'Later Work' are now transferred to this volume, and conversely, in order to preserve a proper chronological sequence." This book is "good only" with a serious one-inch frayed spot to top corner of spine, and a rear board slightly warped so it wants to stand open by an extra half-inch. The original, printed, unpriced heavy brown paper dust jacket is also "good only," with top inch of spine missing and two tape ghosts to rear panel, where pieces of nitrate tape (now gone) were used to close a partial tear. (The heavy paper is actually capable of coming apart in layers.) One of these dark rectangles passes through the stylized Beardsley signature device (originally "from the reverse cover of 'Salome'"), picked up and copied to DJ rear panel here from rear board of this book. Jacket had separated along spine and a few small pieces of "Magic" tape have been used to verso only to hold jacket together sufficiently for placement in current Brodart protector. Moderate foxing to endpapers and some text pages, though the plates (which make up most of the book), having been printed on a better, coated stock, remain lovely and largely unaffected by foxing. So why is this book of some value? First, it's holding together: While the glued binding is usually described as "perished," with most or all plates loose, all 157 plates here remain bound in place. And, of course, there's the presence of the somewhat uncommon original dust jacket. Tiny bookseller's label indicates this copy original sold at Swain's, 123 Pitt St., Sydney, and there are some 1960s Australian newspaper clippings concerning revival of interest in Beardsley laid in; it's possible this book (while hardly pristine) benefited from its long stay in a moderate antipodean climate. A NOTE TO OUR OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS: While we welcome offshore orders, heavy books present a special problem. We ship our books in boxes, and all international boxes of more than 4 lbs. must now travel by air, "Priority Mail." This book is thus likely to cost something on the order of $54 to ship overseas. While we rebate overage above actual shipping costs, overseas buyers should not order this book or other heavy books unless they're willing to approve and pay the requisite "Priority" shipping. This jacketed copy now reduced from $720. Seller Inventory # 003486
