Offering four ALSs from ALDEN SPOONER of New Bedford to SAMUEL SANFORD of Newport, Rhode Island, a merchant active in the slave trade. Spooner s letters relate to an estate dispute involving the affairs of Captain ELNATHAN HAMMOND in Newport. The dispute was between Mrs. [Elizth] Sprague (of New Bedford), daughter of the deceased, Hammond, and a Mr. Ritcheson (or Richardson), who was concurrently in litigation with Hammond s estate over payment of his room and board. Hammond was a sea captain in the merchant service sailing from Newport and was no doubt well acquainted with Sanford, who apparently provided room and board to Hammond. 5 pp total, some slightly different sizes, but approximately 6 ½ x 7 ½. Each with integral address leaves. The letters to Sanford are as follows: --March 23rd, 1798: "To address you in behalf of Mrs. Sprague, who wishes to know when she is likely to receive what is coming to her from her Father s estate, she wishes that you would forward a particular statement of the Estate to her & what you have done with Mr. Ritcheson, whether you have obtained a settlement with him, or not and when it is probable you can be ready to settle with her if she should come again to Newport, all which she is anxious to be informed of by directing a letter to me & leaving it in the Post Office it will come speedily to him who is your most Obedient Servant, Alden Spooner" --April 18th, 1798: "Rec d your favor of the third & have communicated the same to Mrs. Sprague. We suppose that Mr. Richardson s charges are innormous, & that Capt. Hammond never had any idea of giving such a price for his board as every person who knew Capt. Hammond knows that he was a very economical man & that he would not have contracted for such a price per week & as he has credited but 10, we presume that he had agreed for that price & charged Mr. R in the same proportion for the articles which Mr. R. Rec d of him, thereupon seems to me to have much weight in the balance of the estate s favor, as you wish to know our opinions of the subject of a suit. Again Mr. R, we suppose that a reference would be most to be preferred but if that should be objected to would recommend to project rather than submit to rush injustice. All which is submitted to you & Mr. Lyndall who are better acquainted with every circumstance that we can be & also of what weight Capt. H. accurate way of doing of all his business will have with a jury in your county, which I think will be a very good circumstance in favor of Capt. H estate.Alden Spooner" --June 11th, 1798: "This will be delivered you by my son who will put up at Mr. Ed w Simmons. Mrs. Sprague weights to hear how the matter is like to be settled with Mr. Ritcheson whether you have sued him or not or whether you are likely to accommodate any other way as I wrote to you last April in answer to your letter.I need not repeat what that mentioned but wish you to write back by my son, the state in which that case is now in. Your compliance will now oblige your most obedient & humble servant. Alden Spooner" --July 2nd, 1798: "I rec d yours of the 4th of June, by which I am informed that it is the opinion of the heirs in your neighborhood to dispose of the public securities (which Capt. Hammond left).I communicated your letter to Mrs. Sprague, who is confident that you will do what is most for the benefit of the heirs & did with that it be done soon as possible & she is also pleased to [know] that you are in a way to obtain a just settlement with Mr. Ritchardson by way of reference as it seemed the only way that justice was to be obtained. Now if he is closely watched (as I doubt not but that he will be) the math of his deceit may be taken of or seen.I should have written before this time, but not having any direct conveyance have omitted it as you waited me not to send by the post.Alden Spooner" ALDEN (1750-1844) was a farmer who spent much of his adult life in government service, serving in both branches of the state leg.
