About this Item
[80] leaves in small folio size. Last leaf is partially torn with loss of some algebra. The oldest date on the inside front board is 1779, but it is probably older. It includes handwritten math problem solving questions in clear script followed by handwritten algebra. The question in the bartering section that is most interesting. It talks about bartering Negros for horses.[See image] While these old math books do show up from time to time, the slavery bartering question is unusual. Many of the problem-solving questions are formulated with names and most are English and some are Dutch which leads me to believe the math book originates from New York and possibly from a member of the Schuyler family. The name Schuyler does appear in one question and the book includes an inserted document with Eliza Schuyler's name in calligraphy dated Pompton October 18th, 1804. It's unclear if this is the same Elizabeth Schuyler who was married to Alexander Hamilton. There is some internal marginal staining, but it is otherwise in well preserved. Seller Inventory # 008412
