Print on Demand. This book is a critical edition of the earliest complete translation of the Book of Psalms into English prose, which likely took place in fourteenth-century England. The authors of this book provide a detailed examination of the manuscript evidence and an assessment of the literary and linguistic qualities of this version. The book also situates this translation within the history of biblical translation, and in the context of other pre-Wycliffite English prose. By examining themes of scripture utilized in the Middle Ages, this book contributes to a larger understanding of the ways in which the Bible was interpreted in the Middle Ages and the depth of biblical literacy present in England prior to the advent of printing. In all, this is an important contribution to the scholarship of pre-Reformation English biblical translation, the history of English prose, and late Middle English dialects. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The oldest English Psalter is anglo-saxon; only the first 50 Psalms are in Prose, and are ascribed to King Alfred. There are several Old English interlinear versions, glossing the Latin word by word and during the middle-english period the Psalter was repeatedly translated into English Verse.
