En la línea de las aportaciones de N. Chomsky y J. W. Harris el profesor Otero somete al filo de su crítica a maestros y autoridades tanto de la "vieja" como de la "moderna" lingüística en el curso de su discusión, que tiene el tema de la historia estructural de la lengua como espinazo básico. El "Apéndice" que cierra el libro, con la lista de los procesos fonológicos, representa una de las contribuciones más notables al estudio diacrónico del romance, en particular del gallego-portugués y del español.
