EUREKA DAILY SENTINEL (Original Issue from 1875]
Interesting and scarce (and genuine) antique newspaper from a Nevada town of the old West. A well preserved example. Filled with quaint news of the day and interesting advertisements. Many of the ads are for saloons, and some of the ads have little illustrations such as the one for an undertaker showing a horse drawn hearse with a viewing window on the side of it, the driver dressed in mourning clothes (see photo of this ad ). One of the saloons listed in the ads is called the Bonanza Saloon. This was the period in Nevada in which the tv series Bonanza was set. Eureka is in north-central Nevada and was once a thriving town of about 10,000. Silver was discovered there and lead was also mined. It also became known as a smelting center. This original newspaper dates from a few years before the town reached its zenith, and is also dated before a fire destroyed half the town. Today, Eureka is a virtual ghost town with just a few of its buildings still standing. Present population is less than 500. 19th century newspapers from the old West are scarce and desirable. Condition of this issue is better than average for what is typically found of these today. The two sheets of the issue are still joined although not as securely as 136 years ago. Small bit of chipping at the edges affecting only the blank margins. The pages are clean and the paper still quite supple for one of these. Old inked stamp of a San Francisco advertising agency at upper right corner of the front page, not affecting any content. Size: Large Folio, Four Pages. Bookseller Inventory # 2520
