London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, & Co.; Southampton: Coupland, 1837. Two volumes. 16mo. xi, [1 - blank], 290 and v, [1 - errata], 304 pages. Modern green library cloth with gilt spine lettering. 18 x 11 cm. Gathering "R" in vol. I is bound upside down. Transparent tissue reinforcements on the first and last page of each gathering; in vol. 2 a small amount of text is covered with no impact on legibility. Internal library marks are limited to occasional embossed stamps and two marginal accession ink stamps in each volume. The text is generally clean with a few traces of light and most marginal soiling; a little edge wear to the title page of vol. 2. A serviceable reference set. Styled as a "new edition" and probably the third edition overall. It was preceded by the first edition of 1834 (in one octavo volume; Southampton) and the stated second edition of 1835 (same publishers as the present edition). This etymological study was one of the last books by Bellenden Ker (1764-1842), an English botanist, author, and editor of the "Botanical Register." Ker was also "known as a wit and man of fashion in London. Many stories were told of the charm of his conversation, and he was the hero of some 'affairs of gallantry'." --Oxford DNB. The first volume of this set includes a glossary (pp. [285]-290). Lowndes II, p. 1267.
