About this Item
Hand-coloured lithograph, 14 x 11 inches overall, depicting the chapel viewed from the northwest with sheep grazing in the foreground. Incidental to the subject, in the background we can see the Martello tower standing at the end of the Leas on the left, and a coach and horses ascending Military Hill on the right. The lithograph is in very good condition, apart from an inch and a half old closed tear in the lower margin and some slight loss of surface near, and slightly effecting, a few letters in the titles. Mounted in conservation materials. Rare, lithograph view of the Episcopal Chapel at Sandgate, built in the Palladian style, with cupola on top. The Earl of Darnley built the 'Episcopal Chapel' on a plot of land from his adjoining estate and this was consecrated on May 8, 1822. Sandgate was developing rapidly at that time, and when the railway reached Folkestone in 1843, a much larger church was needed. The earlier building was demolished in 1848, and a new, larger church, St. Paul's was completed the following year. Thomas Purday was established as a Bookseller and owner of the circulating Library in Sandgate as early as 1816, he published a Sandgate, Folkestone and Hythe Guide in the 1840s and passed on the business to Sarah and Mary Ann Purday, who reissued the guide with their own imprint about 1846. It would seem the view of the Church was issued as a consequence of its imminent destruction, making way for the larger replacement. We have only seen one example of this rare view before, over 20 years ago. KENT SANDGATE KENT. Seller Inventory # 22236
