About this Item
143 x 83 mm. (5 5/8 x 3 1/4"). 16 p.l., 98, [2] pp. Modern sympathetic quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands, brown morocco label. Wood-engraved frontispiece depicting the humble abode of Epictetus in Rome. Title page and A3 with ink owner's signature of Mary Aston. ESTC T138736. â Margins trimmed a bit close, with minor loss to fore edge of frontispiece (including a couple letters in caption) and the occasional catchword, frequent (but minor) yellowing and foxing, half-inch triangular tear to gutter of last two leaves, affecting a couple of words, but still generally agreeable internally, and in an unworn retrospective binding. First printed in 1692, this rhyming translation of the classic Stoic manual for living is the work of an Irish schoolmaster who found consolation in Epictetus during the 1689-91 Williamite War fought in his homeland. The work is dedicated to Walker's uncle in York, with whom he took refuge during that conflict. Our edition is the first with an index, allowing the reader to find quickly passages relating to such topics as Accidents, Patience, and True Freedom. Walker (d. 1701) was headmaster of Drogheda Grammar School from 1687-94, and a plaque in St. Peter's Church at Drogheda remembers him for his honesty, diligence, and modesty, noting that "he educated the innocent without pain, the poor without price.".
