Environmental toxicologic emergencies rarely arrive with a label.
Instead, they present as an unconscious patient with pinpoint pupils, a farm worker collapsing after pesticide exposure, a child who swallowed an unknown medication, or a victim of smoke inhalation whose condition is deteriorating by the minute. In these critical moments, emergency clinicians must recognize patterns, think mechanistically, and act before laboratory results ever return.
Environmental Toxicologic Emergencies was written for exactly those moments.
Whether you're a medical student, emergency medicine resident, toxicology fellow, emergency physician, physician assistant, nurse, or paramedic, this comprehensive clinical guide helps you rapidly recognize life-threatening toxidromes, understand why toxins produce specific clinical effects, and confidently initiate evidence-based treatment.
Rather than relying on memorization alone, this textbook teaches the clinical reasoning framework used by experienced medical toxicologists—allowing you to approach unfamiliar poisonings with confidence and make sound decisions under pressure.
Inside you'll discover:
• Rapid recognition of the major toxidromes
• Evidence-based management of environmental and pharmaceutical poisonings
• Mechanism-based antidote selection and dosing principles
• Practical interpretation of ECGs, laboratory findings, and toxicology investigations
• Advanced elimination techniques including hemodialysis and activated charcoal
• Management of pediatric, geriatric, occupational, wilderness, and pregnancy-related toxicologic emergencies
• HazMat response and mass casualty toxicology principles
Why this textbook stands apart
Unlike many toxicology references that simply catalog poisons, this book teaches clinicians how to think through toxicologic emergencies using systematic clinical reasoning.
Every chapter includes:
- Case-based learning
- Evidence-based recommendations with GRADE ratings
- Clinical pearls
- Board-style review questions with detailed explanations
- Practical treatment algorithms
- Mechanism-focused antidote selection
Designed for USMLE Step 2 CK, ABEM board preparation, medical toxicology fellowship training, emergency medicine education, and bedside clinical reference, this comprehensive guide equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to manage complex toxicologic emergencies.
Develop the diagnostic instincts trusted by experienced emergency clinicians and be prepared when every minute counts.
