Spines just a bit faded, but the gilt detailing is still brilliant and unmarred. Ribbon bookmarks detached but present. Edges of the endpapers tanned and armorial bookplate inside each front cover, bearing the name of Sir William A.H. Bass, Bart. Very mild foxing on foredges, endpapers, and some margins; otherwise, pages clean and binding tight across the set. Lavishly illustrated with color plates, facsimiles of letters, and black and white drawings. The volumes' individual titles are FROM THE BEGINNINGS TO THE AGE OF HENRY VIII, FROM THE AGE OF HENRY VIII TO THE AGE OF MILTON, FROM MILTON TO JOHNSON, and FROM THE AGE OF JOHNSON TO THE AGE OF TENNYSON.
