"Empire Ships of World War II" is the story of British merchant shipping during the 1939-45 war years, providing a complete record of ships built in the United Kingdom or acquired for the British flag during this period - the Empire Ships - with their details and subsequent histories. The history of each ship built is detailed by type, sublisted under the name of the shipbuilder, and historical notes are given for each shipyard. Ships requisitioned and bought, tonnage acquired from the United States by purchase, lease/lead or charter, and captured and confiscated enemy vessels are all listed separately. Background narrative sets each section into the overall context of the conflict, and the authors have included a detailed account of the use of merchant vessels as blockships in operation "Overlord". This long-awaited updating of the 1965 version of the book now includes all private buildings under contract or licence, yard notes on British builders involved and their 1935-45 warship building lists.
