[EMA] Tanaka SHUNJI, editor. EMA KAGAMI Isshû, Nishû. Printed by by Bankadô in Kyôto, Taishô 7 [1918]. Two large tassel-bound volumes of designs and explanatory text regarding the ubiquitous ema tablets used as offerings at shrines. Originally "pictures of horses" "e-ma" were used as a substitute for the horse offerings given by those of greater means to secure the favor of the divine. As a form of folk art, "mingei", they were and are quite popular in Japan. There was a definite mingei boom through most of the 20th century in Japan and this wonderful set is a product of that boom. Volume one has 26 color prints on 24 sheets, volume two has 28 color prints on 26 sheets, along with extensive descriptive text in Japanese. Beautifully printed through, These large (12 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches} tassel-bound volumes in printed silk over board covers are quite a deluxe production and very unusual.
