"Revised and Improved Edition" (as stated upon title page). i-xxiv, 25-396, [12] pages. Hardcover: H 20cm x L 13cm. Original dark cloth rubbed with some light staining; spine ends chipped headband and tailband exposed; spine's gilt lettering flaked and dulled but discernable; board edges worn particularly at bumped corners. Edges toned; contemporary pencil ownership inscriptions for Macon, Mississippi resident and University of Mississippi student Thomas Foote on several initial leaves and rear pastedown; toning and some foxing to interior leaves as well as a few scattered pencil marks. Binding is firm. A good+ copy of a popular nineteenth century text which was first published in 1835. A Baptist educator, professor of natural philosophy, and economist, Francis Wayland served as the fourth President of Brown University from 1827 to 1855. Although a date does not accompany Thomas Foote's inscriptions, the book's publication date would place his college days within a few years after the Civil War which, of course, decimated the University of Mississippi's enrollment.
