A distribution system is where power-system engineering becomes a service delivered to one specific customer at one specific address. Every choice behind that service, how a feeder is configured, how a transformer is sized, how a protective device is coordinated, how a system is grounded, ultimately shows up as the reliability, power quality, and safety a household or business actually experiences. Yet the engineer responsible for those choices is often working from scattered references, with nothing that carries one consistent set of tools from load forecasting through fault analysis to the economic case for a modernization budget.
This engineering reference closes that gap. Across sixteen chapters, it develops the complete analytical toolkit a distribution system depends on, from planning and load forecasting, through feeder topology, transformer and substation sizing, and voltage regulation, into the full protection and reliability sequence: symmetrical-component fault analysis, protection coordination, and grounding design. It closes with the operating and economic layer a modern system now demands: power quality, distribution automation, distributed energy resource integration, and the present-worth and risk-based methods that justify a modernization program to a utility's own capital-planning process.
By working through this book, you will be able to:
- Forecast feeder load and translate diversity and coincidence factors into a defensible capacity-planning trigger.
- Carry per-unit and three-phase circuit analysis through a complete feeder voltage-drop calculation.
- Size transformers and substation equipment, and set voltage-regulation equipment to hold a feeder's voltage profile within its required range.
- Build a symmetrical-component fault study from first principles and use it to set and verify protection coordination margins.
- Design a grounding system correctly and calculate the reliability indices utilities use to benchmark how well a system actually serves its customers.
- Evaluate a candidate modernization investment using present-worth, levelized-cost, and risk-based prioritization methods, and carry that case through to the documented justification a utility's capital-planning process expects.
Every chapter follows the same structure: stated learning objectives, full explanatory prose grounded in one consistent notation carried across the whole book, worked examples that carry realistic numbers through every intermediate step to a boxed answer, and chapter-closing practice problems with their own answer key. Back-matter tools, a master notation table, a glossary, an equation quick-reference organized by chapter, and unit-conversion tables, keep the book usable as a working desk reference long after a first read.
This book is written for the practicing distribution or power engineer who needs a rigorous, design-oriented treatment of how distribution systems are planned, analyzed, protected, and kept reliable, and for the upper-level electrical engineering student building toward that role.
A complete distribution engineering reference, structured to teach once and serve for years. Get your copy and start working through it chapter by chapter.
