FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.5 x 6 inches. ix + [i] + 435 pp. Bound in original quarter dark blue over light blue cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper (with author portrait on rear), which has edge wear including chips at head and tail of spine. Deckled fore edge. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by title page and section and chapter heading vignettes. First edition in unclipped dust wrapper of the novel by US author, Thornton Wilder (1897-1975), which won the National Book Award in 1968. The plot hinges on an unjust accusation of murder and moves from a small Illinois mining town to Chile; it also incorporates a saga of the protagonist's family back in the USA. FICTION NOVELS LIT.
