Item description from seller

An Essay on the Original Genius and Writings of Homer: With a Comparative View of the Ancient and Present State of Troade. Illustrated with Engravings. By Robert Wood and published in London by H. Hughs. 1775. [15] + 342 pp. 11.5” x 9.25”. 4to. Hardcover contemporary full leather. As-is, with boards detached. Scuffing and losses to boards, particularly along edges and corners. Chips and losses to binding on spine. Front end page detached. Piece of half title removed along spine. Light markings. Remainder of text block generally bound well. Lacking frontispiece, with all included illustrations and plates photographed above. Gibbon name-label affixed to upper left of front pastedown. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce printing of Homeric writings and influence, along with the ancient and contemporary state of the Troad. This piece does not include the elaborate bookplate that defines most pieces from the library of Edward Gibbon. However, the font and cut of the name-label matches near-identical copies found on books from Gibbon’s library, with two examples online from copies present at Cambridge University and Harvard University. Gibbon’s library, which he once compared to a seraglio, was not merely for pleasure and collecting; rather, it served as a valuable repository that made The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire possible. This is an extremely rare opportunity to own a piece of the library of one of the most prominent and influential 18th Century classical historians.
