Chapter One

Dylan often wonders what's inside of his head that makes him crawl around, cry and laugh, or go to bed.

What's inside your noggin is an amazing surprise that doctors and scientists are helping us to realize.

Your brain's safe inside, protected all around.

It controls everything you do and takes in what's around.

Meet Neuro the neuron. He makes up the parts. "With some chemicals and fluids, your brain's state of the art!"

When your heart beats and beats or your lungs take a breath, your brain stem's in control. It's up to the test.

The cerebellum is for movin' and groovin' and such. Stay active and your brain will thank you so much.

Your brain needs to move; it needs lots of action.

This leads to better learning and life satisfaction.

In deciding when and where, your brain has a spot. The motor cortex chooses when to go and when to stop.

The motor cortex divides the brain into halves-one half in the front and the other in the back.

The corpus collosum, too, divides the brain into parts. Using both sides makes better use of your smarts.

The world all around you looks both exciting and new. The occipital lobe makes sure you have a great view.

Deciding what is up and finding what is down can be quite a mess without help around.

The parietal lobe helps you out, right, left, up, and down, to balance and be stable, with both feet on the ground.

Chitter and chatter are how you start to talk. This may even begin before you learn to walk.

The temporal lobe handles language, allowing us to expound.

It turns sound into thoughts and turns thoughts into sound.

Deep in the middle, way down and inside, is one key brain part too important to hide.

It's called the hippocampus, and its job is quite tough. It keeps your brain from taking in too much stuff.

As you learn new things, you start adding new stuff. Remember to take a break, or the brain will scream ...

Your brain will start to forget, get confused, or just quit. It needs time to think, to let all the new things fit.

If things are uncertain, frightening, or unclear, the amygdala goes off, alerting "danger may be near."

The amygdala can be helpful by sounding an alarm. It keeps you safely away from things that may cause harm.

Now, Neuro has saved the most amazing part for last. The frontal lobes make us special, let us see beyond what has passed.

The frontal lobes help us think, make guesses and decisions, deciding what is right and dreaming up our wishes.

That's why it takes so long To become a grown-up. The frontal lobes take their time to grow and develop.

Advice from a neuron may seem hard to understand. But take it from me, your brain's got the best plan.

Dylan, your brain will forever change and continue to grow. What are all the reasons? Scientists still do not know.

Appreciate the power of this amazing body part. Your brain is awesome and state of the art.
