About this Item
New York and Switzerland: Geigy Company Inc., 1936. Octavo (25cm.); publisher's blue gilt-lettered cloth; [2],60pp.; two-hundred and seventy-nine (279) wool samples mounted throughout. Boards lightly worn at spine ends and corners, some foxing to boards, else Very Good, contents bright and sound. Card sleeve mounted to front pastedown dated 1936 retains four blank request cards. Catalog of dye samples for the American market issued by the venerable Swiss chemical company of J.R. Geigy, founded in 1764 by Johann Rudolf. Shortly after this volume was issued the company entered the pharmaceutical business, eventually merging with Ciba AG in 1971 to form Ciba-Geigy. The bulk of the work organized into tables separated by wool sample, beginning with a short and vivid description ("cheap bright Red of good covering power"; "Chiefly used for Navy Blues on ladies' dress goods"; "high tinctorial strength"). These are followed by instructions in dyeing, degrees of water spotting, perspiration, etc. Fore-edge thumb index subdivides these wool samples by dye type: "Acid," "Fast Acid," "Weak Acid," "Polar," "Neutral," and "Chrome." OCLC no. 84648928 lists a similar item dated ca. 1950, held at the Getty, the American Textile History Museum, and the Science History Institute only as of December, 2021. Seller Inventory # 21585
