"The Duke of York's Steps" is a masterfully crafted work of British detective fiction from the Golden Age of the genre. Set against the atmospheric backdrop of 1920s London, the narrative begins with the sudden and suspicious death of Sir Benjamin Tovey, a prominent financier who collapses at the foot of the Duke of York's Column. While the death initially appears to be from natural causes, the keen instincts of Inspector Poole of Scotland Yard suggest a more sinister reality, sparking a complex investigation into the victim's personal and professional circles.

As Poole navigates the high-stakes world of finance and family inheritance, he uncovers a trail of clues that point toward a meticulously planned crime. The novel is celebrated for its procedural authenticity and its focus on the logical deduction required to solve a mystery within the upper echelons of society. Henry Wade's storytelling provides a sophisticated puzzle, blending a compelling cast of suspects with a sharp analysis of motive and opportunity.

With its intricate plotting and classic suspense, "The Duke of York's Steps" remains an essential read for fans of traditional mysteries. It offers a timeless exploration of greed and justice, capturing the essence of early twentieth-century crime fiction.
