Item description from seller

broadside, large woodcut vignette, drop head title, four columns of text, (370 x 240 mm), roughly trimmed, very good. Broadside setting of the first part of this didactic poem by Hannah More, in which she exhorts her readers not to take risks by presenting the case of John the haberdasher who went to sea and lost his livelihood. Entered in the Stationers' Register in February 1796 (Spinney), this broadside setting predates the poem's publication as four booklets (entered in August of that year). It has an attractive woodcut of John behind the counter at his thriving clothier before taking the ill-fated step of becoming a sailor. (See: G.H. Spinney, 'Cheap Repository tracts: Hazard and Marshall edition' Library 4th series, volume 20:3 (December 1939), 55.) (ESTC T48064).
