Stop treating drones as flying gadgets. Start understanding the engineering behind them.
Drones bring together mechanical systems, electronics, embedded computing, sensors, software, communications, and control theory in one remarkable platform. But building an autonomous UAV requires more than assembling a frame and installing a flight controller—it requires understanding how all these systems work together.
Drone Engineering from Scratch provides a practical introduction to the engineering principles, tools, and workflows used to design, build, program, simulate, and develop autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles.
Rather than focusing on a single drone model or a narrow software tool, this book takes a broader engineering approach. You will explore how UAV components interact, how flight-control systems operate, how software communicates with a drone, and how programming and robotics technologies can be combined to create autonomous capabilities.
Inside, you'll learn how to:
-
Understand UAV architectures, components, and system design
-
Select and integrate essential drone hardware
-
Explore motors, ESCs, batteries, sensors, and flight controllers
-
Understand the fundamentals of flight control and autonomous navigation
-
Use Python to develop UAV applications and automation
-
Work with robotics tools and communication interfaces
-
Integrate sensors and telemetry into UAV systems
-
Develop autonomous missions and navigation workflows
-
Use simulation to test UAV applications before physical flight
-
Understand the role of companion computers in autonomous drones
-
Design practical UAV projects from concept to implementation
-
Troubleshoot common hardware and software integration problems
Whether you're a developer entering aerial robotics, an engineering student, a hobbyist moving beyond commercial drones, or a professional looking to strengthen your UAV development skills, this book provides a structured foundation for understanding the complete drone engineering lifecycle.
Drone Engineering from Scratch is the starting point for readers who want to move beyond simply operating drones and begin understanding how autonomous UAV systems are actually engineered.
Build the foundation. Understand the systems. Start engineering autonomous UAVs.
