Item description from seller

London: S.Crowder, C.Ware, and T.Payne, 1773. Irish-born Congreve (1670-1729) grew up in Ireland, attended Trinity College Dublin, and was a friend of Dean Swift; he is an acknowledged master of English Restoration drama. This is an attractive two-volume set of his works in a contemporary full-leather binding. One of the earliest collections of his work, this edition is held at the most prominent English institutions, but is uncommon in the trade. Smooth calf with five raised bands on the spine; panels in red and black with gilt titling. Volume One contains "The Old Bachelor," "The Double-Dealer," and "Love for Love." Armorial bookplate & signature on endpapers. 309 pages, with spine numbered in gilt as 154. Volume Two contains "The Mourning Bride," "The Way of the World," "The Judgement of Paris," "Semele," "A Letter concerning Humour in Comedy," and "A Vindication of his Plays against Mr Collier." Armorial bookplate, signature. 285 pages, with spine numbered in gilt as 155. Both volumes have the name stamped on the front cover. Text nicely preserved; while somewhat tanned it remains very clear and readable. The covers have rubbing at the margins, but the set presents very well. Later Printing. Full-Leather. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.…
