The climbs cost you breath. The descents cost you knees, confidence, and races.
You train your climbing. You train your endurance. Nobody ever taught you how to run downhill.
Running down a technical slope is not the opposite of running up. It is a different discipline, with its own mechanics, its own reading, and its own mistakes. Road runners who move to the mountains find that out the hard way: quads burning by mid-descent, short hesitant steps, and the sense that on every trail race the downhill is where the day falls apart.
This is a field manual for technical descents.
Downhill Trail Running is a practical system for mountain runners who want to descend faster, safer, and with more control. Not a training philosophy. Twelve chapters of applied biomechanics, terrain-specific technique, and training protocols you can put to work on your next run.
What is inside:
- Downhill biomechanics. What eccentric loading actually does to your legs, the ankle as the master joint, and a 20-minute prehab protocol you run three times a week.
- Terrain reading at three scales. Macro, meso and micro: where to look, when to decide, and how to get your reading back when fatigue takes it away.
- A technical level test. A nine-dimension assessment and four runner profiles, so you train from where you actually stand.
- Step mechanics and posture. High and low posture, ankle, knee and hip angles, arm counter-rotation, gaze, cadence, and short stride.
- Technique by terrain family. Wet rock, mud, snow, sand, gravel and scree, roots, steps and fallen logs, each with comparison tables for adapting on the move.
- Speed and momentum. Margin as a decision criterion, cornering lines, technical jumps, and a release, reposition and continue protocol for recovering an error mid-descent.
- Poles on the descent. Double plant, third and fourth contact points, distributed braking, and a four-week coordination plan.
- Downhill psychology. Fear that activates and fear that paralyses, four levels of graded exposure, a timed visualization script, and the three-option rule against analysis paralysis.
- Risk, safety and falling. A probability by consequence matrix, your body's yellow and red flags, the STOP protocol, and how to fall with the least damage.
- Fueling on steep terrain. Why the descent breaks your nutrition plan, and how to eat and drink on ground that will not let you.
- The training system. Five decisions, a four-week plan, and a twelve-question final checklist.
Who this book is for:
- Road runners moving to trail and mountain running who want to learn descending properly from the start
- Trail runners who climb strong but give back time and confidence on every descent
- Ultra runners whose legs are wrecked by mile 25 from accumulated vert
- Any runner who has felt fear, tension, or loss of control on steep, loose, or rocky ground
Downhill technique is the most neglected skill in trail running, and the one that separates runners of identical fitness by minutes on every steep descent. Train it on purpose and the mountain stops being something you survive on the way down.
Twelve chapters. Protocols with sets, reps and progressions. Comparison tables, checklists, and decision criteria for real situations. The diagrams, tests and progressions are printed on the page: no links, no downloads, no companion app.
Descending technical ground is a skill, not a personality trait. It can be trained, and it has a system.
Book 1 in the Mountain Body series.
If the descent is what holds you back, this is your book. Start training it on your next run.
