"A Vigorous Defense of Democracy and Capitalism"
As someone who has spent a substantial part of my life traveling and living internationally, I’ve learned that the American democratic experiment and its capitalist economic model are unique, powerful, and, admittedly, flawed. With clarity and wit, Paul Shotton reminds us of the principles that have made America great and the steps we need to take to reclaim our legacy.
Doomed to Fail is not just an endorsement of America's greatness; it's a call to action. It's an invitation to restore, renew, and revitalize the American Dream. A path that takes us back to our roots of liberal democracy and capitalism, to a future of prosperity and equality. Despite all its challenges, capitalism remains the greatest hope for a free and prosperous world. ADAM DOOLEY, CEO of Belay International Corporation
"Make The Banking System More Stable and Resilient"
In “Doomed to Fail,” Paul Shotton’s formal physics education and intuitive understanding of our banking system shines through. He makes two valuable suggestions to make our banking system more stable and resilient: focus on the equity capital of banks and the incentive compensation of their chief executives. - Sanjai Bhagat, PhD
"Practical Picture... to Prepare For The Upcoming Challenges"
"As an optimistic person and leader, I wasn't sure what to expect from the book with its title, "Doomed To Fail." Happily, I found that Paul Shotton presented a practical and hopeful picture of what we can do to prepare for the upcoming challenges that we will need to overcome to build a better future for our children and grandchildren." Tom Naratil, United States Military Academy at West Point
"Our Systems and Safeguards Are In Urgent Need of Updating"
Paul Shotton’s new book “Doomed to Fail” reveals the uncomfortable fault lines in today’s political, economic, monetary, capital markets and banking systems. In doing so, he draws on his physics background to show how these frameworks are not stable but complex adaptive systems, with inherent strengths and weaknesses. Using examples, he demonstrates that human beings are self-interested agents who will always seek to tilt the scales in their favor, and that these systems’ traditional safeguards are in urgent need of updating. Paul’s arguments are supported by a wealth of research, fascinating in itself, and insightful conclusions delivered in a clear and concise writing style. Steve Lindo

Human societies are complex adaptive systems, the nature of which has important ramifications for the way in which countries organize themselves politically and arrange themselves economically.
In Doomed To Fail Paul Shotton explains why liberal democracy is the least-bad political framework, and why every other political system will inevitably lead to war. Likewise, capitalism, which emerged naturally from the industrial revolution, is the least bad way for a polity to organize economically.
Every attempt to improve upon or replace capitalism, however well intentioned, has led to economic disaster. That democracy and capitalism are symbiotic and aligned with the best interests of humanity stems from an underlying mechanism they share with the development of life on earth itself.
Shotton then zooms-in on central banks to discuss the role they played in causing the Global Financial Crisis and, by virtue of their response to it, made the fallout much worse.
As a result of their incompetence and arrogance, our political and economic elite risk the destruction of democracy and capitalism, which have been the source of all human progress since the dawn of humanity. He calls for renewed invigoration of the principles upon which America was founded if disaster for humanity is to be averted.
