Neck deep in debt, LAPD Detective Nic Domino hopes to capitalize on the sensational murder of a famous movie star by selling juicy inside information (real and fictitious) to the tabloids and cable talks shows, then having a ghostwriter turn his investigation into a best selling book and hit movie.
But when Nic arrests a notorious loan shark for the homicide, he makes a terrible, terrible mistake. A careless error in his search warrant allows the killer to go free. In the ensuing public outcry, Nic is fired, goes bankrupt, gets divorced, and loses his house. Without any assets, he is forced to live in his car in the Santa Monica Beach parking lot.
After six months of homelessness, Nic has become a filthy, long-haired bum. When he learns that his mother is to be evicted from her Alzheimer memory care home because of $5,000 in overdue bills, Nic is honor bound to come to her aid. At first, he considers robbing a bank, but then he sees a poster that advertises zero interest “Christian Cash” loans to help the needy get back on their feet. He is dismayed to find that he must apply at the office of the same notorious loan shark he had tried to arrest for the movie star’s murder.
Using an assumed name name, the unrecognizable Nic, gets the $5,000 loan and rescues his mom. But in the process, he is forced to take out a half-million dollar life insurance policy as collateral. Now Nic knows the killer’s MO. No doubt he will change Nic’s beneficiary to one of his own aliases, then kill him at his leisure and collect the benefit. Just as he had done with his other victims.
Eluding the shark’s hit man, Nic gets a break when one of his old cases leads to an assignment with a company that is searching for the lost heiress to a vast unclaimed fortune. If Nic can find the six-fingered woman, he plans to marry her and buy off the shark. But when the time comes to execute his plan, things go completely haywire.
