Print on Demand. This book is an in-depth look at the history of dolls and their significance across many cultures. Originating as iconic, sacred figures, the author shows how dolls evolved from objects of spiritual reverence to beloved companions and ultimately to reflections of contemporary fashion. Beginning with ancient Egyptian dolls from 1000 B.C., the author follows the evolution of dolls in countries across the globe, and their role in representing the people and customs of the times. In addition to discussing the history of dolls, the author also covers the practice of using dolls to teach morality, and their continuing presence in society. This fascinating look at dolls' evolution will delight any reader interested in fashion, history, or simply the wonder and joy of dolls. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

To all those who are interested in dolls, from the children who play with them to the students of their ethnological and educational aspects, I dedicate this story of the doll.
I take this opportunity of acknowledging my indebtedness to those who have contributed to my store of information, among whom are several authors unknown to me, as I found many unsigned paragraphs on the subject in magazines and news papers. I am also grateful to the many friends who have brought and sent me dolls and puppets from all parts of the earth.
Especially are my thanks due to Mrs. John Cooper, of Shanghai, who from the first shared my enthusiasm and who has made my collection unique by her contribution of old and valuable Chinese and Japanese dolls.
