Paperback. Something crosses a dark road in Wisconsin. For a moment, it stands like a man. Then it is gone - leaving a scratch on a car, a smell of rot, and a witness who will spend the rest of their life unable to say what they saw. They call it the dogman. But the thing at the treeline has a hundred older names. In DOGMAN: Anatomy of a Myth, R.J. Blackwell follows the upright wolf across four centuries and half the world - from the Beast of Gevaudan and the werewolf trials of old Europe to a Serbian graveyard, an English drainage ditch, and the burial mounds of the American Midwest. This is not a monster hunt. It is an investigation into a far stranger question: why the same figure keeps appearing to people who never met, in cultures that never spoke - and how a radio prank, a tabloid headline, or a courtroom can raise a legend on top of a real and unexplained fear.Rigorous, unsettling, and refusing every easy answer, Blackwell separates what was documented from what was only ever told, and arrives at the one honest conclusion left standing: I do not know what it is. But I have stopped being able to say that it is nothing.A serious, global reckoning with the myth that will not stay dead - for readers of Linda Godfrey who want the history beneath the headlights.
