Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive biography of the illustrious Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, a key figure in 17th century Mexico. Born into nobility in Spain, Palafox became Bishop of Puebla in 1639 and Viceroy of New Spain in 1642. His episcopate was marked by zeal in defending the rights of the indigenous population, reforming the clergy, building churches and schools, and promoting religious devotion. He was an ardent supporter of the Immaculate Conception and an opponent of the Jesuits. His political administration as viceroy was characterized by financial prudence, defense against pirates, and the establishment of the Tribunal del Consulado. Palafox's writings on spiritual, moral, and political themes, collected in eight volumes, reveal his deep erudition and pastoral concern. His life and work exemplify the vibrant religious and cultural landscape of viceregal Mexico and provide valuable insights into the complex interplay of church and state during that period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …
