Doc is a series of 27 short stories written by Richard J. Junod, Ed. D., who died in June 2025. Richard's teenage life started angrily because his father, Firefighter Bernard J. Junod, was killed in a preventable fire explosion at the Berg Laboratories in Philadelphia, PA, on October 28, 1954.
When ten firefighters arrived at Berg, they were deployed to a "hot" area. The fresh smell of mowed hay drew them to the rear yard, where there was a 4,000-gallon storage tank. The 13-foot tank contained three chemicals. The safety valve was clogged. The combination of chemicals and water formed hydrochloric acid, which reacted with the aluminum alloy tank, creating an unintended product: PHOSGENE GAS.
Richard's stories describe his life as a member of a poor family, without a family, a mother with PTSD, and a city that left the Lost Firefighters and their families to survive on their own. But his life changed with the help of God, his Mother, Uncle Ferdy, the United States Marine Corps, and LaSalle College.
Doc spoke of love, purpose, wisdom, and encouragement. He shared: a passion for people, a love of family, faith in God, loyalty to country & the military, zeal for justice, and a zest for challenges. His STORIES are filled with humor, intrigue, inspiration, and so many life lessons that they can change a reader's heart, shift a life's trajectory, and breathe hope for a new future! Just as Doc's life is sprinkled with poignant words, motivation, adventure, and deep love, his stories are, too. He ran a race few could ever run and won the prize of all prizes.
