Review
.,."for thoughtful personnel managers, [this book] offers a wealth of useful information." --"The Marketplace"
.,.".clearly relevant for an audience of professional managers...also is appropriate for the student of management and organizational studies...contains a wealth of perspectives from writers in academia as well as the business world....Read Jackson's book to recognize the strategic imperatives inherent in managing diversity successfully; to benefit from the diversity management experiences of major corporations, and to enrich your understanding of the extraordinarily complex task of managing our diverse work force." --"Human Resource Planning"
"Finally, a book on diversity that doesn't merely sell a consultant's wares or present a "one size fits all approach"! DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE: HUMAN RESOURCES INITIATIVES is a provocative book of readings, both case studies and critical commentaries, that tackles what some refer to as the issue of the 1990s: managing diversity in the workplace. This book has much to offer both of its intended audiences, researchers, and practitioners...The strengths of this book are its organization, and editing, its reliance on case studies of ongoing organizational efforts, and its critical assessment of both the case studies and the topic in general. Practitioners should find a wealth of good ideas, practical tips, and other information they might want totry in their own organizations. You learn not only what the other organizations are doing, but you also get enough detail to see how they are doing it...Overall, I believe this book makes a valuable contribution to the human resource management literature by providing a broad perspective on diversity and by illustrating a variety of approaches for dealing with it. It is both provocative and practical and the commentaries provide a balance of critical perspectives.... You should read this book if (a) you haven't read anything about diversity and you want to learn something about it or (b) you've read some of the popular books about diversity but you were turned off by their one-best-way approach. In addition, if you are currently doing research on the topic of diversity, or if you are thinking about doing research in this area, this book will be of interest to you." --"Personnel Psychology"
"Finally, a book that tells the stories of real organizations actually working through the many issues of workforce diversity. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to help their organization to capitalize on their changing workforce." --Alison R. Eyring, Ph.D., Internal Consultant, Texaco Inc.
"Excellent....The chapters provide understanding of the challenges diversity presents....The case studies are current and illustrate what some companies are doing to manage diversity. In sum, this book provides a solid foundation for lively discussion in MBA classes [as well as] executive audiences.' --Roger C. Mayer, University of Notre Dame
"An informative walk through corporate walls that reveals a diverse set of perspectives on how workforce diversity relates to business. Of particular interest is how organizations differ in their definition of and approach to the topic of diversity. The reader will come away with a fuller understanding for the many ways that people differences impact business. Such an understanding is essential to anyone implementing diversity training or creating developmental programs that touch the topic of diversity. In addition, the information is a valuable practical review for business professionals responsible for linking corporate strategy and business development to the differences between people." --Thomas Diamante, Ph.D., Manager, Professional Development, Philip Morris, U.S.A.
