Add to basketRenewable energy is key to stopping climate change, however, the intermittent nature of most forms of renewable energy generation poses a challenge. Energy storage is therefore a focus of research and development, particularly for urban areas with their limited space and high population density, which results in massive demand for both small distributed and utility-scale generation. Such locations require thorough integration of storage, with the urban energy system treated as a whole, and sufficient planning, sizing and siting, and upgrades to the existing power grid hardware. This book conveys the technology for energy storage for urban areas, treating the urban power grid as a system, and providing an integrated picture. After an introduction to the energy transition and urban grids, chapters cover experiences and principles regarding distributed energy and storage, grid resilience, EV usage and charging infrastructure, standards and grid codes, monitoring and power quality, hosting capacity, intelligent electricity markets, and integrated operation. Written by international experts in the field, Distributed Energy Storage in Urban Smart Grids offers valuable insights to researchers and professionals from academic institutions, grid operators and the storage technology industry.

He was a Research Fellow with the NASA Glenn Research Centers, Cleveland, OH, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), USA, and Erskine Fellow with the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and with the Brazilian Institute of Electric Energy (INERGE), Brazil. He taught full-time and worked in the industry in the USA for over 24 years. He also taught at the Technological University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He spent 8 years as a transmission system planning engineer in Brazil. He is currently a full professor of electrical engineering with the Federal University of Itajubá. He has authored or co-authored more than 350 papers, book chapters, and 5 books. His current research interests include power electronics, and power quality, transmission and distribution systems, renewable and distributed generation, energy storage, smart grids, engineering education, and philosophy of technology. Dr Ribeiro is a fellow of IEEE and IET.
Rafael S. Salles received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Itajubá, Itajubá, Brazil, in 2021. He is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in electric power engineering with the Electric Power Engineering Group, Luleċ University of Technology, Skellefteċ, Sweden. His research interests are power quality, energy storage, and smart grids. His primary focus on research has been on power system harmonics, waveform distortion assessment, railway electrification, and power quality in general. He is an active member of IEEE and CIGRE. Currently, he is a CIGRE Next Generation Network (NGN) representative for the Brazilian C4 (Committee of Power System technical performance). He has dedicated time and efforts to promoting good research, also performing publications of book chapters, journal papers, conference papers, and technical reports.
