Clashing personalities. Chamber music. Post-War trauma. Is harmony possible?
Sent unwillingly into school and thrust into a string quartet, crippled Irish cellist Lucy Straughan must choose between isolation and friendship.
What has the morose, math-loving Lucy to offer; and will dainty Della Sotheby, hot-headed Pim Connolly, and precocious Phoebe Raye ever accept her?
But Lucy has more to give than she realises. Nor is she alone in her troubles.Meticulously crafted and true to life, A Distant Prospect is an intimate, moving, and at times hilarious coming-of-age story set in 1920s Sydney, Australia.
Sequel By Violence Unavenged will be published 1 June 2019.

Review
A Distant Prospect wins Best General Fiction for 2017 at Catholic Reads:
"In her simplicity and quiet wisdom, Annette Young proves to the reader that it does not take a fantastical world, or superpowers to be a superhero, or even excessively refined martial arts and detective skills to save a life and make the world a better place. In Young’s A Distant Prospect, the simple acts of mercy and charity shown by family and friends restore peace and healing to the wounded and traumatized post-war community. Set after WWI and Ireland’s war for independence, Young tells a story of a community living in Australia through the eyes of Lucy, an Irish Catholic girl of 15 years." - Lori Wilson
"On My List of All-Time Favorite Novels
I can't remember when I've been as touched by a book as I was by Annette Young’s debut work, a meticulously researched and beautifully written coming-of-age novel titled A Distant Prospect. The story is set in Australia in the 1920's, when there is not a person alive whose world has not been somehow rocked (and more often than not, shattered) by the horrors of WWI. While this historical novel would make an excellent choice for young adult readers, it also held this not-so-young reader captive, I can tell you that! Over the course of a few days, I had trouble putting it down. Young has created a world to get lost in here, populated by a large cast of exceedingly well-developed and utterly endearing characters." - Laura Pearl
"A real story of grit, determination, and hope for a world that needs it now" - Jim Poston
"The author's ... love for and extensive knowledge of music, fine arts and literature shines through" ... "The landscapes are vast and vivid, the seasons sensory and real, and the emotional journey heart-wrenching." ... "some of the most profound considerations on the meaning of suffering and understanding others, making allowances for their faults" - Good Reading Guide
