A woman expected at work. A car left behind. A morning the evidence still cannot finish.
Before dawn on June 27, 1995, KIMT-TV morning anchor Jodi Sue Huisentruit answered a call from the newsroom. She had overslept and said she was on her way. She never arrived. Outside her Mason City, Iowa, apartment, her red Mazda Miata remained in the parking area, with personal belongings reported near the vehicle and signs that supported an apparent abduction.
The Distance Remains is a restrained true crime and narrative nonfiction account of the disappearance that has endured for more than three decades. Beginning with the life Jodi was building as a twenty-seven-year-old journalist, the book follows her public routine, the concerns reported before she vanished, the final weekend, the early-morning phone call, and the narrow span of missing minutes between her apartment and her car.
The investigation then turns to what was left behind: scattered workday items, a bent key, reported marks near the vehicle, accounts of a scream, a reported van, and physical evidence that suggested interruption without publicly identifying who was responsible. Each element is examined for what it supports—and for what it cannot prove.
The book also traces the people and theories drawn into the case, later searches and court filings, media retellings, sealed records, and new claims that renewed attention without producing a public charge or a final answer. Allegation is kept separate from evidence. Repetition is not treated as proof. No living person is assigned guilt the public record has not established.
At its center, this is not a story about forcing an unsolved mystery into a satisfying conclusion. It is about the distance between evidence and certainty, the way public memory preserves and distorts a missing-person case, and the human cost of a disappearance that denied a family the ordinary sequence of answers and grief.
Written in an atmospheric, evidence-aware style, The Distance Remains is for readers of missing persons true crime, cold case investigations, unsolved abduction nonfiction, journalism history, and carefully sourced accounts that value clarity over sensationalism. A detailed timeline, key-people glossary, and source index provide additional structure for readers who want to follow the chronology and distinguish documented facts from disputed claims.
Return to the morning, follow the record as far as it can responsibly go, and confront what still remains unknown.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
