Des mérites de Raphael, le Titien, le Corrége, Paul Véronese, le Carache et Rubens. La seconde partie a son propre faux-titre : "Le cabinet de Monseigneur le Duc de Richelieu". Piles y décrit les tableaux de Rubens qui y figurent. La troisième partie s'intitule "La vie de Rubens". Critique d'art et théoricien Roger de Piles (1635-1709) vouait un véritable culte à Rubens, qu'il opposait volontiers à Poussin. Collectionneur de peintures et de dessins, il était l'un des experts du moment, qui jugent de la qualité et de l authenticité d une oeuvre.
