Mere Christianity Discussion Guide: Explore the Heart of Christian Faith
Have you ever wrestled with the basics of right and wrong, or wondered why we all share an inner sense of “ought”? In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis investigates the moral law within us and points to the God who stands behind it. Through compelling logic and vivid analogies, Lewis demonstrates how Christianity addresses our deepest questions about truth, morality, and purpose.
Why a Discussion Guide?
Reading Mere Christianity on your own can be enlightening, but talking it over with others brings these weighty ideas to life. Sharing insights, voicing doubts, and learning from diverse perspectives often sparks deeper understanding and genuine transformation. This guide has helped countless small groups and church gatherings engage with Lewis’s arguments on a more personal level.
What Makes a Great Small Group Experience?
Openness and honest dialogue. When group members ask thoughtful questions and share their real struggles, it creates space for spiritual growth. Mere Christianity is about more than just intellectual debate—it calls us to examine how we live. A welcoming, prayerful environment can turn head knowledge into heart change.
This Guide Includes:
- An overview of small group best practices
- Tips for effectively using the guide
- Chapter-based questions that uncover Lewis’s key themes
- Reflective prompts to deepen your faith journey
- Memorable quotes from Mere Christianity
How to Use This Guide
- Preparation: Each session corresponds to a section of Mere Christianity. Group members should read in advance to maximize meaningful discussion.
- Flexible Format: Aim for around 90 minutes, adapting to your group’s size. Instead of covering every question, cluster a few that resonate with your group.
- Rotate Facilitators (Optional): Let different people lead discussions to bring fresh insight each week.
- Close in Prayer: Reserve time for personal application and prayer, inviting God to shape your lives through these discussions.
- Community Building: Share meals or other fellowship activities to foster deeper connections.
A Word of Encouragement
God is already moving in your heart. Mere Christianity invites you to look closely at the moral law, your own limitations, and the hope Christ offers. Gather a few friends, open your hearts, and venture through these pages together. May this guide help you encounter not just the ideas of Lewis but the transforming presence of God in your life.
