Publisher: John Murray, London

Publication Date: 1853

Binding: Hard Cover

Book Condition: Very Good

Description:

Pp. xxiii, [1] errata, 686. With a folding lithograph frontispiece, 15 tinted lithograph plates, maps, and plans (many folding), plus more than 200 wood-engraved textual illustrations. Bound in contemporary half calf over pebble grain cloth, spine divided into gilt ruled compartments enclosing blind tooled ornaments between raised bands, gilt morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges. Minor wear to extremities, endpapers foxed, occasional light marginal foxing throughout, but overall a nice clean, attractive copy. The First Edition of the second of Layard's two popular works on his travels and excavations among the ruins of Assyria. The first work, "Nineveh and Its Remains", published in 1848, gives an account of Layard 's first expedition to explore the ancient ruins of Nimrud on the Tigris, and later the mound of Kouyunjik, near Mosul, in 1845-46. His second expedition, undertaken in 1849, extended his investigations to the ruins of Babylon and the mounds of southern Mesopotamia. His findings are recorded in the present work, "Discoveries among the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon", 1853. As a result of his explorations and excavations, Layard was able to supply the British Museum with the greater part of its collection of Assyrian antiquities. "Apart from the archeological value of his work in identifying Kouyunjik as the site of Nineveh, and in providing a great mass of materials for scholars to work upon, these two books of Layard's are among the best written books of travel in the language."
