Print on Demand. This book analyzes the sudden death of the eighth American President, Zachary Taylor, through the lens of a sermon delivered in the aftermath of the event. The author, a contemporary of Taylor, uses this tragedy to explore themes of mortality, the ephemeral nature of earthly possessions, and the importance of living a virtuous life. The sermon delves into the concept of retributive justice in the governance of nations, emphasizing the need for leaders to adhere to principles of morality and integrity. It critiques the notion that individuals lacking moral scruples can be trusted with positions of power. The author argues that true greatness lies not in military victories or political prowess but in service to the public good and adherence to Christian principles. Drawing upon the example of Taylor's life and legacy, the sermon highlights the significance of personal virtues such as honesty, transparency, and selflessness in fostering public trust and leaving a lasting impact on society. The author concludes by urging readers to reflect on their own responsibilities, to act with justice and integrity, and to seek solace and guidance in their Christian faith. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Such is the event which is the occasion of our present meeting, and which has clothed the land in habiliments of mourning. The nation deplores its chief, cut off with a fearful suddenness in the day of his high and palmy prosperity, at the very moment of his greatest success, in the hour of his most brilliant fortunes, when he had scarcely passed the threshold of his elevated office; had just received at the hands of a great, enlightened, and free people, the most substantial proofs of confidence in their power to bestow; the festive procession exchanged for the death march, the same breeze, it is scarcely a figure of speech to say, bearing on its Wings the shouts of gratulation and the funereal wail.
