Review
Dr. Craig Bailey, Director, Buncombe Baptist Association, Asheville, NC --Buncomb Baptist Association
I just cannot say enough good things about this book from Alan Melton and Paul Dean. As the founder of FamilyDads.com and the owner of DadResources.com, an online bookstore and resource site for parents, I receive books in the mail regularly from authors and publishers asking me to carry theirs on my site and promote it. With only so much time available to review new titles, I have to be somewhat selective in what I choose to personally read.
Disciple Like Jesus For Parents is one such book I chose. I found myself underlining much of the text and writing personal notes and affirmations in the margins of most pages. When this happens, I know I've found a book I want to include in my store and let other parents know about.
Perhaps the two aspects I like most about this book are the abundance of scripture quotes with references, and the many practical applications, suggestions, and pointers the authors give us. For example, Chapter 8 doesn't just tell us in vague terms to build relationships and "community" in our homes, but gives practical ways of doing so, with a list of at least 20 indoor and outdoor activities that can be done together as a family.
Since both authors are parents themselves, their advice is not coming from inexperience and "theory," but rather from the perspective of what has (and hasn't) worked in training and discipling their own children.
If your heart is turned to your children, and you are looking for a Biblically sound, practical resource to disciple them in your Christian faith, (did I mention practical?), I strongly recommend you pick up a copy of Disciple Like Jesus For Parents and read it with pen in hand.
You'll gain wise words and useful, Biblical insights in your journey as a parent with your children."

September 14, 2009: Disciple Like Jesus for Parents - Following Jesus' Methods and Enjoying the Blessings of Children, written by Alan Melton and Paul Dean, is a book for parents, grandparents who are committed to seeing that their children and grandchildren grow in the knowledge of the Lord and will obey God's will for their lives.
The book starts with the reasons and passages in the Bible that show that it is God's will and command for parents to take full responsibility for discipling their children. Discipleship and the study of God's word should not be given over to others, but it is the parents who should disciple their own children from birth. Discipleship is also a process that will continue on for the rest of the natural lives of the parent and child.
It then moves on to how parents can go about discipling their children. The example studied is how Jesus discipled his own 12 disciples - he stayed with them, lived with them, taught them, knew them well, prayed for them, and finally sent them out in twos. Even after having sent them out, he prepared them for the 'wolves' that they will soon be meeting.
How appropriate that this book was written at this time, when we see so many troubled children - teens and adults alike - all around us. Parents are challenged that if they love the Lord, they will do as He commands and teach their own children about His ways and His will. It takes a comprehensive look at how Jesus took care of His 12 disciples and explains how we can apply this to our own children. The authors are realistic in their writing in that they know that there are so many distractions that parents face today, but they also continue to challenge parents to make hard choices for their children's sake.
Disciple Like Jesus is a ministry whose purpose is to show parents, grandparents and church leaders that children who grew up in church are not being discipled resulting in children that stray away from the Christian faith when they grow up. It seeks to enlighten, encourage and equip parents and grandparents to disciple their children.

June 01, 2009: What a tremendous resource for Parents, Grandparents and those entrusted with the responsibility of growing and training children. Biblical and practical, this model equips parents with the knowledge of how Jesus discipled His followers and the encouragement to disciple their children in the same way. In doing so Parents will discover how they can provide the key ingredients their children need to live a life that glorifies God. They also will learn how, when and why it is important to protect their children from the wolves that seek to destroy them. In addition, just as Jesus prepared his disciples to live for Him after His ascension back to heaven, you will learn how to prepare your children to live for Jesus in a society, culture and world that rejects the Lordship of Jesus Christ yet so desperately needs to hear and respond to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessings to Alan Melton and Paul Dean for their insightful examination and presentation of how Jesus made disciples and the practical application of those truths to family life today which will bring great benefit to those who have an ear to hear, eye to see and heart to use. This book comes not as some theoretical presentation of untried truths and unproven practices. It was born in the heart of Alan Melton who sought to provide for, protect and prepare his own children. He and his wife Donna have practical experience in utilizing these truths in their own life as well as their two precious children. Whether a Parent, Grandparent, Pastor or anyone entrusted with the care of children and youth today, you cannot go wrong utilizing the proven and practical biblical truths this book presents from the life of Christ in seeking to Disciple Like Jesus.

Posted June 1, 2009, 8:17 AM EST: Today, unfortunately, many parents are "outsourcing" their parenting. No one wants to be the victim of outsourcing in business, and it is especially tragic in the home. This book is a clarion call to intentional parenting. Alan Melton and Paul Dean share Biblical principles to follow the patterns of Jesus with His disciples in our own parenting. Public school, Christian school, homeschool can all miss the mark. This is different. This is discipleship. Brian Byars Father of four
