From the Author
As a former reporter (Julie Freestone) and police officer (Rudi Raab), we've seen our share of disasters, including the Loma Prieta earthquake, the East Bay Hills fire and more. The awesome power of those disasters brought home to us the understanding that preventing disasters is difficult, if not impossible. But we also realized there are practical things businesses, families and communities can do to protect themselves and make the recovery period easier. While we found a fair number of practical books available to help individuals in their homes, there were few high-quality, user-friendly books for businesses. We wrote this book so that even overworked business owners, managers, site supervisors and others could use the checklists, tips and guides to begin taking a few simple steps down the road to becoming prepared. We also included real life case studies to make the book more interesting and underscore the point that disasters happen everywhere to every kind of business. We hope the book helps small and large organizations everywhere to start a process that might mean the difference between long term business survival or failure. Please let us know if you find the book helpful.
