For millennia, a race of ancient Angels known as the Watchers has walked among humanity, guiding souls toward their destinies and protecting them from their fates. These eternal guardians, never bound by sleep, brought the secrets of civilization to life and helped souls evolve through the cycles of reincarnation, learning and growing with each life. Disappear: Into Shadow follows Azrael, a Watcher and the former Archangel of Death, who finds herself torn between duty and temptation.
Once a high-ranking figure in Heaven, Azrael is now an outcast, wanted by both Heaven and Hell. Despite this, she remains steadfast in her mission, leading a choir of fellow Outcast Watchers who share her belief in the soul’s evolution. Unlike the stagnant fates offered by Heaven and Hell—eternal damnation or idle paradise—Azrael believes in allowing souls to evolve through the challenges of life. One soul she has closely watched over through countless lifetimes is Michael, who stands on the cusp of transcending to a higher spiritual state. But as their bond deepens, Azrael finds herself struggling against her growing temptation for him.
As she continues her clandestine efforts to free souls from both Heaven and Hell, smuggling them back into the world to experience life again, Azrael becomes a target. Hell learns of her rebellion, and Angels of Wrath are dispatched to stop her. The stakes grow higher as a great cosmic event known as the Balancing draws near, a time when Heaven and Hell will determine the future of the world based on the tally of souls they possess. Will the world shift toward darkness or light? Peace or war? Suffering or tranquility? Azrael must prepare for an impending apocalypse that could reshape all existence.
To survive, Azrael recruits Michael and his friends—Dagan, Simon, and Susan—giving them the choice to transcend their mortal limits and become Watchers. But in the process, Michael’s memories of all his past lives are stolen, leaving him with nothing but a shadow of his former self. As Azrael leads Michael on a perilous journey through the realms of the spirit, they uncover a dark conspiracy led by a shadowed entity known as the Shade.
The Shade, a powerful force that has agents in Heaven, Hell, and the liminal spaces between, is plotting to seize control of the world's souls. With Azrael and her choir in its sights, the Shade has orchestrated a trail of betrayal, leading to the theft of Michael's memories and placing him at the heart of its nefarious plan to end all life prematurely. As the Watchers fall one by one, Azrael and Michael must race through history, uncovering ancient artifacts and clues that could reveal the Shade’s true intentions.
In this epic tale of rebellion, temptation, and the eternal struggle for balance, Azrael must confront her past, protect the souls she’s sworn to guide, and fight against the darkness threatening to consume the world. Will she and her choir survive the coming storm, or will the Shade’s power bring an end to everything she has fought for?
