Print on Demand. This book dissects information technology's increasing dominance in the strategies of organizations. It delves into the influence of this trend on the ability of organizations to design and implement mission-critical systems effectively and efficiently. The book argues that the widespread use of computer-based planning and design tools is a primary strategy to improve the effectiveness of these processes, but points out that there is little empirical evidence to demonstrate a significant impact of this technology. The author introduces a functional model of planning and design tool technology that distinguishes three categories: production technology, coordination technology, and infrastructure technology. An empirical analysis tests this model's robustness and ability to discriminate among current design tools meaningfully. The book concludes by discussing the implications of using this model to research planning and design processes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The literature on US planning and design does offer a starting point. Hackathorn and Karimi (1988) and Welke and Konsynski for example, differentiate between design methodologies and design tools. The former define the logical disciplines underlying i/s planning and design activities. The latter instantiate the principles in a software application. Hackathorn and Karimi Beck and Perkins (1983) and others support the notion that software engineering and information engineering involves the application of sound engineering principles to the task of US planning and design. Understanding these principles offers one means to map the functions of case technology onto key usage behaviors.
