New edition hardcover in fine leather binding. Originally released in installments within 'Fraser's Magazine" in the early 19th century, the favorable reception of 'Digby Grand' during it's publication induced the Author to present this work to the public in a complete form in 1853. This is the new edition of 1890. Red/tan marbled boards quarter bound in red morocco leather with bright gilt spine title and author's name in two of six spine compartments separated by raised bands. There is some water spotting on this backstrip, but it still displays well on the shelf with the bright gilt and four small gilt images that fill the other four compartments, two hunt caps/hunt crops and a horseshoe/hunt crop in the two remaining. Marbled endpapers match the boards, there are no names or soil within the 383 page block but there are four short bits of cello tape over short closed tears in the front endpapers before the story begins. T.e.g., untrimmed fore-edge of page block, leather corners very lightly rubbed, spine ends just brushed, a straight and solidly bound smaller volume measuring 7 3/8" x 5" x 13/16" and is hefty for its size. This is Whyte-Melville's own sporting autobiography. Seller Inventory # 46992
