Ever wondered how a diesel engine can pull a fully loaded trailer up a steep mountain grade while delivering impressive fuel efficiency? Or why modern diesel engines are quieter, cleaner, and more sophisticated than those built decades ago?
Diesel Engine Engineering Fundamentals takes you inside the compression-ignition engine and explains how its major systems work together, from combustion and fuel injection to turbocharging, emissions control, sensors, and electronic engine management.
Written for students, technicians, engineers, fleet professionals, and technically curious readers, this book builds your understanding step by step without assuming advanced prior knowledge.
Inside, you'll learn:
- Diesel combustion: Understand the four-stroke cycle, ignition, combustion phases, heat release, and the factors that influence engine performance.
- Fuel injection systems: Explore common rail systems, injection pressure, timing, injectors, and multiple injection events used in modern diesel engines.
- Turbocharging: Learn how turbochargers improve power and efficiency, including variable geometry and advanced turbocharging technologies.
- Emissions control: Understand the purpose and operation of EGR, DPF, SCR, diesel oxidation catalysts, and related systems.
- Engine management: Discover how sensors, electronic control units, actuators, and software work together to monitor and control engine operation.
- Diagnosis and troubleshooting: Apply structured diagnostic methods to identify root causes instead of replacing parts based on guesswork.
- Engine performance and maintenance: Learn how operating conditions, lubrication, cooling, fuel quality, and maintenance practices affect reliability and service life.
- Future diesel technology: Examine hybrid powertrains, alternative fuels, electrification, and the changing requirements shaping diesel engine development.
Whether you're studying diesel engineering, developing practical diagnostic skills, managing a fleet, working with heavy equipment, or simply want to understand what happens inside a diesel engine, this book provides a structured foundation you can build on.
Twenty-five chapters. Practical engineering knowledge. A clearer understanding of how diesel engines work.
