Print on Demand. This book is a cross-cultural dictionary of English and French idiomatic phrases and proverbs. While many single words in French may have various meanings, several terms are often employed to express a single idea. This book explains each meaning unique to any given word, as well as combinations of terms that consistently convey the same essential thought or cultural concept. These combinations, often created colloquially, add flavor and nuance to French speech, and this work aids English speakers in comprehending and using these constructions. Understanding popular idioms and phrases can greatly enhance one's understanding of and fluency in a foreign language, expanding the depth and ease with which one can interact with native speakers of that language and immersing oneself in the culture it represents. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

For a nation so highly cultivated as the French, and possessed of knowledge so extensive, as well as diversi fied, the language is far from being copious. Hence many a single word is used under various acceptations, and several terms are very ofm.' employed to express a single idea.
Every meaning of a single word, ithat is peculiar to any tongue, may be called an idiomatic usage, but a combination of terms, constantly conveying the same import, constitutes what is commonly meant by idiom. Those combinations, however, which writers, make use of to give agreeable turns to phrases, are not idioms.
