Add to basketA Dictionary of Geography (1950) by W.G. Moore (Penguin Reference Books) ? Condition: Good, as sold by Crappy Old Books You know what they say: never judge a book by its cover?especially if that cover has recently been glued back on with the tender loving care of a battlefield medic applying stitches. Yes, this 1950 Penguin reference treasure came to us in a state that could politely be called ?geographically dislocated? (the body had parted ways with the cover), but after a careful round of literary first aid, it now stands proudly whole once again. Think of it as a vintage atlas with a hip replacement: sturdy, dependable, and ready for another fifty years of service. Inside, you?ll find a glorious mid-century attempt to pin down the sprawling world of geography into tidy alphabetical order. Mountains, rivers, peninsulas, archipelagos?it?s all here, explained in the no-nonsense tone of a schoolmaster who expects you to know your Dardanelles from your Delaware. There?s something wonderfully grounding about a reference book from 1950. For one thing, half the world still hadn?t been rebranded by post-colonial renaming. Expect to bump into countries and borders that have since vanished into history, which makes this dictionary not only a tool of enlightenment but also a fossil record of geopolitics gone by. Condition-wise, this copy is officially Good , but thanks to its restorative surgery, it?s now more solid than many books half its age. The cover is snug, the pages remain crisp, and the book has that dignified air of a Penguin reference that has seen classrooms, libraries, and perhaps the odd kitchen table map quiz. Whether you?re a geography buff, a retro reference collector, or just someone who likes the idea of owning a time capsule that casually explains the world as it was three-quarters of a century ago, this is a book worth giving shelf space to. And if nothing else, it?s living proof that with a dab of glue and a bit of patience, the world really can be put back together.
