Item description from seller

Second edition, "corrected and enlarged," of the first abridged English dictionary; 8vo, pp. [696]; lexicon in double column; light browning of the text, corners bumped, else a very good copy in full contemporary paneled calf, nicely rebacked, gilt-ruled spine in 6 compartments, red gilt spine label. Contemporary ownership signature "Margt. Cuffe" on title page. First published in 1708, Kersey's dictionary "deserves recognition as the first abridged dictionary." Actually, the Dictionarium Anglo-Britannicum is an abridgement of Kersey's 1706 edition of Phillips' New World of Words, and "for its size the work is unprecedented in flexibility and usefulness." See Starnes & Noyes who devote the whole of chapter XIII to this work. Alston V, 92: "The dictionary contains additional lists of terms used in law, and proper names. It is an unconfessed abridgement of Kersey's revision of Phillips' dictionary, though it contains much dialectal material not found in that work." Kennedy 6213; Vancil, p. 138. …
